Welcome to the SAPA tool
The Sustainability Assessment for the Performing Arts (SAPA) tool is a dialog-based self-assessment instrument that supports performing arts institutions in promoting the sustainable development of their organisations.
Following a clear six-phase approach, SAPA helps to analyse and reflect on their organisations' performance, identify strengths and weaknesses, and collaboratively develop sustainable measures. By encouraging open dialogue and active participation across all hierarchical levels, the tool supports the creation of ideas and strategies across four defined areas: ‘Economy’, ‘Ecology’, ‘Social Responsibility’, and ‘Community, Culture, and Communication’.
Developed by the Wuppertal Institute through a co-creative process involving the European practice partners as well as local associate partners, SAPA builds on the existing SAFE tool (Sustainability Assessment for Enterprises) and was specifically adapted to the needs of the cultural sector.
SAPA is intended for anyone who wishes to approach sustainability in the cultural sector in a holistic, participatory, and practical way. The tool can be used entirely offline or in combination with the digital features provided.
SAPA is currently available in a beta version in English. By the end of June 2025, it will be fully functional and accessible in all partner languages – German, Italian, Latvian, and Slovenian. Video tutorials and a step-by-step guide will support new users throughout the process. Kickstart your SAPA journey with our introductory presentation.
