The first workshop in the event cycle "Environmentally Friendly Creative Practice in Performing Arts" has taken place!

On September 11, the co-creation space “Sadarbnīca” hosted the first workshop of the event series. Kitija Balcare (Ph.D. cand., theatre critic and researcher at the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art, University of Latvia) introduced participants to the concept of ecotheatre in Latvia and worldwide, as well as scenography and costume design based on circular economy principles.

Participants — including representatives of Latvian performing arts institutions, artists, and students — gained valuable theoretical knowledge, preparing them for the next stage: the practical workshop on October 9 at the Latvian National Theatre, where they will develop their creative ideas using sustainable methods.

This workshop series is part of the Latvian National Theatre’s ongoing efforts to create environmentally conscious productions — a journey that began last season with “King Ubu and Other Monsters” (directed by Vladyslav Troitskyi, Ukraine) and will continue with the upcoming 2025/2026 production of “In Flames” (dir. Inese Mičule, scenography by Reinis Dzudzilo), premiering on March 12, 2026.

Upcoming workshops:
* October 9 – Practice (led by scenographer and visual artist Pamela Butāne)
* October 30 – Reflection (led by producer and Greenstage expert Maija Pavlova)

The aim of the event cycle "Environmentally Friendly Creative Practice in Performing Arts" is to foster a sustainable performing arts community, building knowledge and collaboration between creative professionals who seek to integrate environmentally friendly practices into their work.
