Volkstheater: A Circular Hub for Culture
Volkstheater has long been a central pillar of Vienna's cultural scene, recognised for its humanistic position, its artistic influence, and as a venue of countless vibrant productions. Owned and operated collaboratively by the federal state of Austria and the City of Vienna, the theatre embodies a commitment to circularity in its infrastructure and audience engagement.
Maximising Resource Efficiency:
- Excellent Public Transport Links: Volkstheater prioritises sustainable mobility, offering convenient access via two subway stations, a tram line, and a bus route. This reduces reliance on private vehicles, minimising carbon footprint and congestion. Volkstheater recognises and supports a move towards greener transportation choices by its patrons.
- Decentralised Heat Supply: Since the 1980s, the theatre has embraced a circular heating system, utilising Vienna's city infrastructure for heat supply. This gradually eliminates dependence on fossil fuels like oil, promoting resource conservation.
- Renewable Energy: Volkstheater transitioned to 100% carbon-neutral green electricity from Europe in 2020. By 2025, it will source 100% certified electric energy from Austrian hydropower, further reducing its environmental impact.
Continuous Improvement:
Volkstheater actively participates in regular environmental audits to receive and maintain its prestigious state-issued "Umweltzeichen" (environmental label). This commitment to eco-design ensures the theatre continuously improves its environmental performance, striving towards carbon neutrality by 2040.
By prioritising resource efficiency, renewable energy sources, and sustainable practices, Volkstheater exemplifies a circular approach to culture, ensuring a vibrant artistic space for generations to come.
