The Wuppertal Institute
As an implementation-orientated research institute for sustainability and transformation research, the Wuppertal Institute is dedicated to creating real-world solutions that help society operate within the planet’s ecological boundaries. Building on the foundations of traditional scientific work, we pursue an inter- and transdisciplinary approach in which science doesn't just observe the world’s challenges but actively engages in the transformation needed to solve them. The research projects focus on the stakeholders who are actively involved on the ground and usually work closely with them. Alongside a broad spectrum of different scientific disciplines, the Wuppertal Institute has also been working on projects at the interface of art, culture, design, and sustainability for some years now. Together with practice partners, we are researching the potential of art and design for socio-ecological transformation.
Our Greenstage project team, consisting of researchers from the Division of Sustainable Consumption and Production and Circular Economy, is working in collaboration with the practice partners and municipal stakeholders to develop tools for the performing arts sector to address pressing global challenges like climate change and resource efficiency. One of these tools is the "Sustainability Assessment for the Performing Arts" (SAPA), a dialogue-based self-assessment tool that helps theatres identify their strengths and weaknesses, foster innovation, and improve internal communication. While SAPA primarily focuses on ecological aspects of sustainability, it also considers economic, social, and organisational aspects, encouraging a holistic approach to sustainability.
Another key development is our "Zero Waste Toolbox," which offers practical guidance and best practices examples for reducing waste and creating more circular theatre productions. Both tools are being developed through a participatory process with the Greenstage partners, ensuring they are grounded in real-world practices and tailored to the needs of the cultural sector.
Through our commitment to inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration, the Wuppertal Institute continues to push the boundaries of how research can drive the great transformation and support our belief that creativity and environmental responsibility can, and must, go hand in hand to create a sustainable and desirable future.
