Greenstage partners unite in Riga to advance sustainability in the performing arts sector
During the project management meeting on June 2–5, 2025, the National Theatre of Latvia hosted an intensive work meeting for Greenstage project partners from Italy, Austria, Germany, Slovenia, and Latvia. This collaborative gathering marked a significant step forward in developing practical tools for circular transformation in the performing arts sector.
Key outcomes:
-
Online tool development - partners advanced three flagship initiatives:
•The SAPA self-assessment tool for implementing sustainability in theatres;
•The Zero Waste Toolkit for circular productions;
•Policy Hub frameworks for trans-institutional collaboration and change;
2. Peer Learning: Cross-border knowledge exchange sessions refined project methodologies;
3. Co-creation: Participants witnessed innovative eco-theatre staging in the performance "King Ubu and Other Monsters" (directed by Ukraine's Vladyslav Troitskyi);
4. Community Building: Field trip to Sadarbnīca co-creation space and an informal evening at theatre Ģertrūdes ielas teātris strengthened partnerships.
The Power of Collaboration:
"The Riga meeting demonstrated how international collaboration accelerates cultural sustainability," noted Rihards Gāle, project manager from the National Theatre of Latvia. "When diverse perspectives unite, we create solutions no single country could develop alone."
Looking ahead:
The Greenstage consortium will now focus on testing and implementing these tools across partner theatres. The next milestones include:
- SAPA tool and Zero-Waste Toolkit online launches;
- Zero Waste performances and festival;
- Policy guidelines for EU performing arts institutions.
